  1. Load the heaviest items, such as major appliances and furniture, on the truck first. Place these items along the front wall of the truck box. Keep all appliances upright to avoid damage and try to place the refrigerator and the washer in opposite corners to keep the load balanced. Cover with furniture pads or old blankets to help protect finishes and enamel coatings.
  2. Get help loading large or heavy items. Use hand trucks with load-locking straps. When using a hand truck, back up the ramp pulling the weight behind you. Have a second person follow to help push the load and keep it steady.
  3. Load boxes with heavy items such as books first, and stack similar size boxes on top, with box weight getting progressively lighter as you continue to stack. Place odd-shaped, lighter weight and fragile items on top of the load.
  4. By using wardrobe cartons, clothing can be packed on hangers. This also cuts down on packing and unpacking items, and help to avoid wrinkling during the transport.
  5. To reduce weights when loading, remove drawers from desks and dressers. After loading, replace the drawers and tie rope or cord around furniture to secure the drawers and prevent damage from accidental openings.
  6. Always bend your knees and left with your legs, never with your back.
  7. Place extra long items such as mattresses, box springs sofas and large mirrors along the walls of the truck. Use mattress bags to help prevent soiling.
  8. Make use of the space under tables and on chair seats by packing smaller boxes in these areas. This also creates a tighter load and helps to reduce shifting during transit.
  9. Roll up and tie rugs and carpets. Disassemble bed frames and tie the rails and crosspieces together with rope or tape. Load these items lengthwise on the floor in the center of the truck.
  10. When packing bicycles, loosen, lower and turn handlebars at right angles to save space.
  11. The truck size you select should have 10 to 15 percent more storage space than your anticipated need. As you pack, maintain a consistent load height from the front to the back of the truck to help prevent load shifting during transit.
